Public Books was founded in 2012 by Sharon Marcus, a professor of literature, and the anthropologist Caitlin Zaloom. The mission of Public Books is ‘to publish writing that is erudite without being esoteric and brings scholarly depth to discussions of contemporary ideas, culture, and politics.’ Simply put, it is a platform for experts to engage in public scholarship so that the boundaries between various disciplines, and the barriers separating the academy from the public, may be disturbed and ultimately broken. In the end, Public Books intends to ‘make the life of the mind a public good.’
