Edited by Margret Grebowicz, a Polish philosopher (and former jazz singer) at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, Practices is a series of books that ‘are by and about amateurs in the original sense—those who engage in pursuits out of sheer love and fascination.’ With titles such as Running (Lindsey A. Freeman), Juggling (Stewart Lawrence Sinclair), Fly-Fishing (our own Christopher Schaberg), and Riding (Pardis Mahdavi), the books in this series tell us as much about the activities they explore as they do the people who enjoy them and the world in which they are loved. Grippingly, not all the activities are ‘traditional’ hobbies, evinced by McKenzie Wark’s Raving, which explores the queer and trans rave scene, and Terry Bisson’s Tomorrowing (a collection of Bisson’s contributions to the “This Month in History” column in the science fiction magazine Locus).
